World Language Honors Society -W.L.H.S. for short- is a program that encourages and honors students with a distinguished and passionate interest in language learning. The school offers 3 languages; Spanish, German and French.
There are a few requirements to be inducted to W.L.H.S. “The students must have taken that language for 4 years (you get inducted by language), and the students must have achieved a 90% or higher each year in that language class,” said Assistant Principal Stacy Anuszewski. Students are then able to use this honor when applying for colleges and jobs. Additionally, students will be given a special cord at graduation that distinguishes them as members of the W.L.H.S.
Celebrating these achievements can have positive outcomes for the language programs. “This does benefit the World Language programs by giving them the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of students who invested many years into the world language of their choosing,” said Anuszewski. “It positively reinforces to strive for high achievement.”
One language program that benefits from this is French. “A French Honor Society is important to help promote a community within French Classes and also to recognize students for the commitment made for taking four years of a language.” said French teacher, Katherine Rimdzius. Rewarding hard work and commitment to taking a language has brought benefits for the French program. “High academic achievement within the French Program will improve the strength of the language program.” said Rimdzius. “When students succeed in French it can lead to a program that has the potential to grow into a much bigger program than it already is.”
Students who are indicated to French Honors Society will be honored at a dinner taking place in winter. They will receive a certificate and a red, white, and blue colored rope to wear at graduation.
Honoring students that have shown years of dedication and diligence to language learning often encourages students to keep striving for more. For languages, there is always more to learn and improve. Anuszewski said, “It acknowledges and rewards 4 years of dedication and hard work.”
