How are we going to do this without dishonoring Logan’s memory? Well, we aren’t. All right, let’s do this. Maximum effort.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is dead. At least it has been since after ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Producers have thrown together heaps of messy storytelling, hoping that the movie might be a hit. Yet ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ might have pulled the MCU out of the trenches. Fox killed Wolverine. Disney brought him back. They’re going to make him do this till he’s 90.
‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ has injected new life into the MCU, being the first R-rated entry and the first to directly incorporate the X-Men series among other Fox-era Marvel films. Disney bought Fox; there was a whole boring rights issue, but then it turned out that Fiege wanted another Deadpool movie.
Cameos from characters such as Blade, Elektra, Laura (a.k.a. X-23), and Gambit have opened a revived following to the characters as well. All these cameos were well deserved and seeing Channing Tatum as Gambit was…wow. Gambit did finally get to make a name for himself after losing his movie that was supposed to be released in 2016. The whole film centers around variants, fans are given a hint at a future Blade movie. So, sorry Blade, but there’s never going to be only one of you. Was the audience blessed with seeing a Magneto cameo? No, because Disney decided to get cheap.
Fans also saw comic-accurate, 5’3, short-king Wolverine during Deadpool’s hunt to find an ‘alive Logan’. Plus, fans were gifted with the sighting of The Cavillrine, which was a subtle nod to the past possibility of Henry Caville playing Wolverine. Fans also got to see Wolverine actually wearing a costume, like he’s not embarrassed to be in a superhero movie for once. That only took 20 years. Seeing Wolverine wear his classic yellow and blue suit and adorn the classic cowl was beautiful. Clearly, he only saves the good stuff for special occasions, which is killing mostly. For the first time in his life, Wolverine was proud to wear that suit because it meant he was an X-Man. He was THE X-Man.
Everyone wants to matter. It turns out you don’t need to be Marvel Jesus to do it. You just need to open your eyes and appreciate the world around you. And if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll find some old friends and make some new ones. Deadpool did save the Marvel Universe, and the best part? Sometimes the people we save, they save us right back.
